Landscaping design ideas for a new build in Auckland
Recently, a client who I’ve worked for over a number of years on different projects ranging from garden maintenance, full tidy ups, planting and landscaping – contacted me asking for landscaping design ideas for a new build town houses in Campbells Bay on the North Shore in Auckland, New Zealand.
A repeat customer says a lot in a competitive marketplace! We are lucky that many of our customers come back when they want new work done. We do take pride in our work and we believe a repeat customer proves that.
I met up with the clients to discuss design, new plants, new planter boxes, deck extension, new lawn and two car parking areas.
What to Do With A Blank Canvas Garden
The area was a blank canvas so we agreed on Ficus Tuffy – a popular hedge plant that’s compact, dense and has bright emerald green foliage. It’s a hardy and fast growing plant that gets up to around 3m tall and can be easily trimmed to the desired height. These were to be placed around the boundary lines of both properties to create a bright green hedge against the black painted fence.
Firstly I had my digger guy scrape and level the ground around the property enabling us to have a good, solid base to work with. We then set about constructing treated timber planter boxes to fill with new garden soil and plant the Ficus Tuffy hedges. Adding mulch once plants are in helps with moisture retention and weed suppression. We painted the planter boxes black in order to blend in with the fence and create a sharp look against the green plants.

Landscaping continued adding fresh lawn soil mix to the lawn areas, preparing lawn areas on both properties with new soil, levelling and compacting the soil then laying new tall fescue lawn. Once again the black painted garden edges looked great against the newly laid lawn.

Extending the deck was mainly the steps onto the new lawn and car parking area on the rear property using hardwood timber matching the existing decking area. The building work was done first before laying the lawn so as to not disturb the newly laid lawn.
The parking areas were landscaped firstly with the digger to get the required levels to add gap metal compacted down and then car appropriate plastic sheeting to help with stability when adding River stone which helps it stay in place when parking the car. This is a great permeable option for parking spaces rather than concreting or paving.
The clients were living overseas at the time so full project management was required with this landscaping project. I had worked with the client for a number of years and when they returned to Auckland for a holiday they were delighted with the overall landscaping project.
I return every couple of weeks to look after the garden maintenance and enjoy the fruits of the labour.
Customer Feedback
Hayden has been doing our gardening and lawns for 5 years.
When we recently completed building 2 town houses we had no hesitation getting Hayden on board to plan and plant our out door areas.
We were both in Australia when Hayden and his team were able to do this.
The transformation when we came back was amazing! From mud and dirt to modern green landscaped edged areas and ready made grass. We both couldn’t have been happier!
Hayden is wonderful to deal with. Totally reliable, knows what he is doing and can manage projects even when you are not there and all with a smile! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
