New Lawn Installation in Takapuna
New lawns are hard work to install, fortunately we love hard work and a fresh new natural grass lawn looks amazing. Here’s our blog post about a recent new lawn installation in Takapuna, Auckland.
I was contacted by a client who had recently bought a new house on Auckland’s North Shore. The current lawn was ok but they wanted a fresh new look to match the fresh new house.
Removing an Old Lawn
First things first, removing the old lawn. I got my digger guy in to scrape the old grass away and around 40mm of soil. Most of the time the lawns are in tricky spots around the back of houses and this was no different so whilst a digger did the scraping we still needed to roll our sleeves up and get the wheelbarrows involved and fill the skip which was around the front of the house. Once the old grass has been removed it’s time to add 50mm of new fresh lawn soil mix, sand based rich with fertiliser to help with new growth once the lawn has bedded in.
Adding new soil is a good start however part of the preparation is making sure the surface is level. This is important so the new lawn roots can bed in and grow evenly and of course it helps mowing a smooth lawn rather than on with bumps. The best way is to use a lawn roller filled with water whilst raking out any uneven areas creating a firm base for the new lawn.

Once the base is prepped it’s time for the new lawn to be laid. This isn’t rocket science, it is hard graft but totally worth it in the long run. It’s important to lay the new grass on the same day as it’s delivered to give it its best chance of a healthy new lawn. After the lawn is laid the most important thing is to water it and make sure it is watered morning and night in order to keep the soil moist, obviously the amount of water will differ depending on the time of year. The ideal time of year is spring or autumn but hey this is Auckland with four seasons in one day.
This particular client was overseas at the time so I set up a timer to water the new lawn and would check on progress every couple of days. In the ideal world an irrigation system is the best way to go prior to the lawn being laid, yes we offer irrigation installation service however a couple of sprinklers can be a more cost effective solution. This project took three to four days with maintenance whilst the owners were away.
